Vishay Releases New Liquid Helium Capacitor

Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc announced that it has introduced a new high-energy liquid tantalum capacitor, the EP1, to meet the needs of aerospace applications. For each voltage class and form factor rating, this device has the highest capacitance value in the industry. To increase design flexibility, the EP1 offers radial through-hole or surface-mount terminations in three, A, B, and C form factors, each with screw mounting options.

The devices released this time are manufactured using Vishay's proven SuperTan technology, which has capacitances from 2000F to 30000F and voltage ratings from 25VDC to 125VDC. These performance metrics of EP1 are leading the industry, with A-profile devices achieving 13000F at 50V, which is 18% higher than the nearest competitor. Capacitors have a standard capacitance tolerance of ±20% and a tolerance of ±10%. The C form factor is expected to be released later in 2017, and the B form factor will be released in 2018.

The EP1 features a full-bore sealed enclosure for improved reliability for pulsed power and energy conservation applications in laser guided, radar and aerospace systems. The device operates from -55°C to +85°C with a temperature derating of +125°C and a maximum ESR of 0.030Ω at 1kHz and +25°C. Capacitors are tin/lead (Sn/Pb) terminated and RoHS compliant 100% pure tin termination.

Samples of the EP1 A form factor are available now and are in volume production. The lead time for major orders is ten weeks.
